![]() ![]() There’s no reason baseball couldn’t restructure into a nationally relevant powerhouse of fan interest, but allowing the small markets to turn over their rosters every four years hoping to hit the lottery on the right set of 0-6 guys who can beat a $300M juggernaut from NY or LA with a $120M push is killing interest from all but us die-hard fans. Talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy! It’s so transparent that MLB only cares about the popularity of baseball in its biggest markets, but when the other half of MLB’s markets keep seeing eroding interest, all of a sudden baseball is NASCAR and becomes a truly niche, regional affair. Instead, Manfred openly describes baseball as a “regional” sport. Maybe these cable operators figure out a graceful pivot to aggregating streaming content they way they have been bundling linear TV, but so far the streaming services are completely Balkanized and if baseball thinks it can subsidize its local market revenues indefinitely with bundled cable subscriber money from the RSNs, they’re in for a shock within as little as a decade’s time. The RSN gravy train is headed for a cliff. MLB should care about parity, but they’re so shortsighted under Manfred they only look at the next couple years and assume nothing is going to erode our from under them. (And yes, I know teams like the Marlins and Royals have random spikes in quality, but these teams that don't spend money do not sustain any level of success) From the owners perspective - why do other owners want to allow a business who isn't really trying to run a competitive team to share in their profits, simply for taking a loss.įrom the players perspective - why don't players care about a bunch of teams that are not paying players? That's a lot of money and a lot of contracts that would go to players if those teams couldn't exploit this. ![]() It forces every team to spend money and not run on massively thin budgets.īut it seems like nobody in baseball ever brings the topic up. But I've always felt like the salary floor is what has really made the NFL the premium example of parity. It's been generally accepted that a salary cap (even a soft cap like the luxury tax) helps with parity. 2023 StandingsĬlick a team's logo to visit their subreddit National League West news rumor opinion analysis trivia Serious image video gif game thread feature notice misleadingĪround the Horn general discussion thread - August 5, 2023 Welcome to /r/Baseball!
